River casemate Lent
The river casemate at Lent was built by the Dutch armed forces in 1936 to defend the Waal Bridge in the event of a German invasion. On Sept. 17, 1944, bridge and casemate were in German hands. Under the bridge a bursting charge to destroy it, the detonator in the casemate.
On Sept. 20, as British tanks drove up the Waal Bridge toward Lent, the bridge was not blown up after all. Possibly due to a faltering detonation mechanism, possibly on the orders of a German general.
