Monument The Crossing

At the memorial on the Oosterhoutsedijk in Nijmegen, Wednesday, Sept. 20, the 48 American soldiers who lost their lives in September 1944 during the Waal crossing will be remembered. Mayor Hubert Bruls will lay a wreath, in the presence of representatives of the American 82nd Airborne Division. Pupils from De Oversteek elementary school, which has adopted the monument, will give several performances.
The Waaloversteek was carried out on Sept. 20, 1944, by several hundred soldiers from the aforementioned American army unit.
In this operation, the German army was defeated in and around Nijmegen and the city was liberated.
The memorial ceremony is on Wednesday, Sept. 20, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
