On the night of November 17-18, 1942, a large razzia took place in Nijmegen. 196 Jewish residents were rounded up and taken by train to the Westerbork transit camp, from where they were deported almost immediately to Auschwitz extermination camp. Only four of them survived the horrors of World War II. The personal property of the Jewish families was confiscated, their homes confiscated and looted.
Eventually this and other raids meant the total demise of almost the entire Jewish population of the city. After April 1943 there were no more Jews in Nijmegen, except those who had gone into hiding. November 17, 2022 marks the 80th anniversary of the great razzia. An important reason to dwell on this. This will happen with an extensive program from mid-October to mid-December.
