The Crossing
The Nijmegen city bridge De Oversteek commemorates the Waal crossing on Sept. 20, 1944.
American soldiers crossed the river here in canvas boats to capture the Waal Bridge and the railroad bridge from the north bank. Forty-eight soldiers died. In tribute to them, the bridge is equipped with 48 pairs of light poles, which are lit one by one every evening at sunrise in the tempo of a slow march. That is also held here every night: the Sunset March.
